Learn self-defense skills and get fit
Today more than ever the need for self-defense is of utmost importance. Tune in to your local news station or scan the daily papers or the latest streaming headlines and you can’t help but notice the number of assaults happening right in your neighborhood.
Whether it’s shootings at a nearby school or other public venue or a child being bullied or even physical abuse in the home, it seems that it’s only a matter of time before you are affected . . . . either directly or indirectly.
What will you do if confronted with a situation where you have no way out but to engage the aggressor? Do you cower in fear and become another victim or do you take the initiative to defend yourself and possibly your loved ones?
A recent story about an Albuquerque woman who was about to be sexually assaulted illustrates the importance of being able to defend yourself. Did she become another victim? No. She used some self-defense techniques she learned in martial arts class and was able to fight off her attacker.
She also applied the main purpose of self-defense and that is to create distance between her and the attacker. After she disabled him she ran to a neighbor’s house to call for the proper authorities.
Self defense means using any method you can – as quickly as you can – to disable or disarm your attacker and get as far away from them as possible.
The number one rule is to always avoid situations where you put yourself or a loved one in danger. And common sense should always rule the day. But sometimes it’s just not possible.
The need for personal self-defense
Sometimes it takes more than pepper spray to disable an assailant. You can search online for stories of cops using pepper spray to try to stop a perpetrator only to have it backfire.
A determined and experienced criminal can only be stopped using physical force. Imagine you empty a can of OC spray in someone’s face and they are still coming at you. What would you do?
How many times have we seen graphic videos of kids being bullied on the school bus and the bus driver is not able to come to their assistance. This happens everyday. It may have happened to your kids or maybe even to you when you were younger.
Another important rule of self-defense is to not exude the appearance or image of a helpless person. In other words don’t invite someone to attack you.
As we get older our reflexes are slower; our movements are not as quick as a younger person and it’s easy to become a victim. If you have been reader of my blog posts you will know that I am a big proponent of fitness for all ages.
Whether we are forty, fifty or older it’s important to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. This means living an active daily life.
