Make this the best year of your life

A new year, a new decade, a new you. Have you made a resolve to do better this year than you did last year? If you did, great. I hope you follow through on all your goals especially your decisions on getting and staying healthy. Remember: without good health, you are handicapped.

The unfortunate truth is that we make these resolutions every January and vow to stick to them. However, come June and for many not even that long – February, we’ve completely forgotten what our goals for the new year was. Why?

To make this the best year of our lives, healthwise we need:  External guidance – some one to keep us accountable.

My goal for this year is to continue to maintain a healthy blood sugar level throughout, by making even better choices with my diet and exercise program than I did last year. And I plan to let everyone in my circle know my goals, as this will keep me on target.

If we don’t stick to our goals . . . guess what? We will be making the same ones this time next year. Make this the year you meet and surpass your targets.

You have less muscle mass now than this time last year

As we age, the tendencies are to gain weight and lose muscle mass. This happens because we become less active. We seek out activities that are less strenuous on our bodies and are not mentally demanding – watching the ‘ole boob tube’ or catching up on the books we didn’t have a chance to read in the past.

Also, we are hoping to avoid injuries, which are more likely to happen when we pass a certain age.

We are one year older today than we were a year ago however, we can be one step closer to vibrant health if we can stick to a good health routine.

Here are some tips to help you look and feel younger this coming year than your actual age.

Habits

To succeed with any healthy routine it’s necessary to make it a habit. Habits are based on choices and are a result of doing something over and over. The more we do something the more our brain and body does it without thinking.

Start a workout program

Get started on a good exercise routine that you can stick with . . . at least past April by following these steps:

  • Establish your long-term goals – What do you want to accomplish? Is it to get stronger, run faster, breathe better, normalize your blood sugar, able to touch your toes or bring out those abs that’s been hiding for sooo long? Put it in your Journal. Based on your long term goals you can set daily, weekly and even monthly targets.
  • As mentioned above – Keep a fitness journal where you will log the exercises you do and when . . . also the foods you are eating everyday.
  • Medical check-up – If you haven’t been active lately it’s best to get a status update from your healthcare provider. Follow their advice.
  • Determine whether you are going to exercise at home or at a health facility. There are pros and cons to each one.
  • Personal Trainer – finding a good trainer is like striking gold as far as getting fit is concerned. They will guide you along and make sure you stay on track.

Motivation

In order to remain on target we must convince ourselves to not quit but to stay the course by doing the following . . .

  • Keep you goals in a place where you will see them everyday – on your bathroom mirror, on your kitchen counter, on your TV, in your car, in your pocket, on your night stand, on your phone.
  • As mentioned above, tell those in your circle – family, friends, co-workers – what your health plans are for the coming year.
  • Get a workout buddy – this is by far the best motivational method that helped me.
  • Get some inspirational music that will have you moving.
  • Do before and after photos at least once each month.
  • Try to workout at the same time each day.
  • Train for an upcoming event and
  • Take up a sport.

Don’t get disappointed if you had bad day or two when you didn’t follow your routines. Remember, this is a lifetime commitment and you will not execute perfectly everyday . . . because life gets in the way. But keep you goals front and center and you will make advances.
