How to overcome poor blood sugar control to live a normal life

To be a good actor requires total dedication and focus. Imagine memorizing lines upon lines of scripts for a movie as well as being able to perform physically at a high level. Imagine, also, needing to gain weight for a particular role and then having to lose it for a different role. It will eventually take a toll on your body.

This is what happened to Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Elvis Presley and many other entertainers. Although Hanks admitted that his normal body weight tended to be on the heavier side, he was negligent in not noticing the signals of pre-diabetes.

Constantly losing and gaining weight will have negative consequences on our bodies and one such side effect is developing uncontrolled blood sugar.

Entertainers are no different than us. The only differences that they have deep pockets and can afford expensive treatments. But you can be just as successful, if not more so, at controlling your blood sugar and preventing and reversing pre-diabetes condition.

My story

In my case, family history was the culprit. I come from a family that ate a lot of starchy foods – rice, potatoes, cassava, green plantain, dumplings and other floured products. Consuming this type of diet regularly, will also have a negative impact on our bodies over the long run. As a consequence, many of my family members suffers from uncontrolled blood sugar.

We all went through a stage when uncontrolled blood sugar should have been detected; and we could have taken steps at this stage to prevent further advance to full blown diabetes.

I am still at the pre-diabetes stage and this is due to me taking action by eating right most of the time and following a consistent activity program. Many of my family members were not as moved as I was to avoid this awful disease and it can be seen in the effects on their bodies. As I have shared in previous posts, I lost my mother to diabetes and am currently seeing the effects of this disease condition on other family members.

So how do you recognize the effects of poor blood sugar in your body?

What are the signals for pre-diabetes?

  1. One of the first signs of pre-diabetes is a feeling of tiredness that comes on during the day, especially when you are not doing anything strenuous.
  2. If you notice you vision becoming blurry periodically for no reason, your sugar may be too high.
  3. If you have to pee more often than usual your body is telling you something.
  4. Do you need to quench your thirst more than you usually do? That signals that your body needs to get rid of excess sugar.
  5. Excessive sweating is also another subtle sign.

Prevent pre-diabetes by taking the following steps:

Get regular medical checkups. This is the most obvious way to determine if you have the condition.

  1. If you are pre-diabetic, now is the time to start paying more attention to what you eat.
  2. You must become more disciplined in your daily eating habits.
  3. Become a student of the various food types – protein, carbs, and fats – and how they affect your blood sugar.
  4. Start reading labels on all packaged foods. You would be surprised at the amount of sugar and other additives that manufacturers put in their products.
  5. Start a consistent activity program that includes flexibility routines (stretching) as well as cardiovascular and resistant type exercises.
  6. Learn ways to de-stress.
  7. Proper rest and recovery must be done every day for optimum energy and clarity of mind.

Hanks and Berry and others, follow the same steps outlined above and so can you.
